Coaching FAQS

What does the role involve?

Working as a conversation practice partner involves speaking to students, as much in your own language as possible, to help them improve their fluency.

Working as a coach is more structured. You will take students through topics to build up their language skills. We provide you with training and materials to do this.

There may also be the opportunity to speak at events or conduct particular cultural training sessions with our corporate clients, which we aim to match you with based on your prior experience.

What is the style of teaching?

Sessions are one-on-one or in group (up to three students).

Conversation Practice – these are sessions of pure conversation, for students to have "contact hours" with the language they are learning. your role is to help them improve their speaking and discuss topics they are interested in (sent to you in advance). It is not suitable for beginners, and you will only conduct those sessions with intermediate to advanced speakers.

Complete Coaching – this a teaching session, where you will follow a curriculum to teach a new language to a beginner learner. Chatterbox uses the Flipped Classroom methodology. You will become familiar with it during your training. Only tutors with experience will be selected to deliver Complete Coaching services.

Where do the lessons take place?

The lessons take place in London and online.

The main site for in-person lessons is the University of London’s Senate House. Tutors based outside London work via Skype.

What is the pay and when am I paid?

Chatterbox pays the local living wage, based on where the coach lives. You can read more about the living wage here.

All sessions delivered are paid pro-rata on this hourly wage. An additional fee is paid for in-person sessions, to help cover travel cost (you will receive more information on this during the training period). If students cancel their session within 2 days, you are paid 1/2 of the session fee.

At the start of each month, all coaches should send their invoice to Chatterbox, using our automated invoicing tool. You will also receive training to learn how to use this tool. For example, you will be able to send us you invoice for all July sessions, starting from August 1. It takes 1-3 weeks for the pay to be received.

How many hours’ work can I expect?

This varies depending on demand. However, work is completely flexible and you can choose the days and times you are available.

When would I start?

We are recruiting on an ongoing basis.

I’m an asylum seeker. Can I apply?

We welcome applications from refugees and asylum seekers with the right to work.

I’m not based in London. Can I apply?

Yes. Sessions can be both in-person and online, so you can work online if you’re not based in London, so long as you have access to internet and a webcam.

How good does my English have to be?

We require you to be comfortable enough with English to explain what words mean, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. Conversational English is assessed by the Chatterbox team in the application process, but Level 2 is about right.

How should I apply?

Fill out our language coach application form with your details.

What happens after I apply?

We will review your application form, and we will let you know within a week if we’re going to invite you for an interview. Interviews are online, and last about 30 minutes.

We look forward to hearing from you!
